January Club

Welcome to the Sassy Stitchers.
January's meeting was a lot of fun. I hope I can do as nice a job on the blog as Amy did
We started with Terrie showing us how to put in a zipper with a serger. You need to use a cording foot for this. It allows the teeth to sit in the groove.
https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XryM99KG8mc/U5CraSCkQzI/AAAAAAAAD7k/0UqNUUeLktM/s1600/%255BUNSET%255D
1. Open zipper and line up the first side of fabric with the edge of the zipper fabric.
https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FYuXWXXkobs/U5CrT4jaZ2I/AAAAAAAAD68/LARt2lMiifo/s1600/%255BUNSET%255D
2. Serge that edge
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tJ1MeQypIAo/U5CrRZ4CGrI/AAAAAAAAD6s/hcGEYQM7IYU/s1600/%255BUNSET%255D
3. Close zipper
4. Line up and pin second side.

5. UNZIP zipper.
6. Serge this edge.
7. Re-zip zipper having the zipper tab in the middle of the opening.
(if you have it open all the way or closed all the way you will cut off the zipper tab)
8. Keeping right sides together, you can then sew up both sides of the item.

Then Jan showed us how to do appliqué and reverse appliqué. When doing appliqué you will have 3 sets of stitches. 1st one is placement line, 2nd is the securing stitch line and the final one is the satin stitch. You can use the same color for all 3 since the only reason there are 3 colors are to have the machine stop at each stage.
After stitching the placement line,

Place the fabric covering the stitch line.
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4GBOzVoUJxc/U5CqtjSBOWI/AAAAAAAAD3M/iq8rMOGOwJM/s1600/%255BUNSET%255D
Stitch out the securing stitch. Gently remove the hoop from the machine and do not remove the work from the hoop.
https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JeRFAjeWCUg/U5CqlGTunEI/AAAAAAAAD2c/-q2ARyCNxto/s1600/%255BUNSET%255D
Trim close to the stitch line without actually cutting the stitches.
Place the hoop back in machine and stitch out the remaining satin stitch.

Tips include using a large piece for the appliqué so that you are able to grab it as you cut near the stitch line.

  1. Reverse appliqué is done by stitching out the placement line directly on the stabilizer.
https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nr-h3oq1Ado/U5CqWnZAd4I/AAAAAAAAD1M/dd3rK9IPUz0/s1600/%255BUNSET%255D

2. Place both of the fabrics on top.
3. Stitch out the securing stitch
4. Cut out the inside of the top layer being careful to not cut the second layer.

5. Stitch out the final satin stitch.
